Statement
Most of my art is comprised of figure drawings with different elements intertwined throughout each piece. I create each piece beginning with a figure drawing and then add an assortment of found images and shapes to the composition using liquid latex transfers. The result is a dream-like collage of transparent colored objects interacting with the figure beneath.
A common theme throughout my work is unseen structure beneath the skin. I try to reveal a structure that is there that we don't always see, but we obey it anyways, whether consciously or subconsciously. The workings of the mind and human behavior have a mysterious logic that intrigues me. Our bodies are complex machines, as is the society we live in. Everything can be measured down to a “T”. That structure might be formed by the government, society, religion, technology, nature, etc. When do these structures change? When do people stop obeying them and go their own way? Should we play by the rules in the game of life, or play by our own rules? Were we born this way or shaped by our environment?
I try to address all of these questions and more in my drawings and paintings. Visually, I have created an interpretation of the body that is in a state between chaos and control, and at times as efficient as the workings of a machine. I have mixed industrial elements into my drawings to reflect the industrial environment we all live in. I like to imagine a world where our minds, bodies, society, technology and nature are one and work together harmoniously.
